LAKE PLACID - Several area competitors were among those completing the Lake Placid Ironman on Sunday.
Competitors completed a 2.4-mile swim course in Mirror Lake, a 112-mile bike ride from Lake Placid to Upper Jay, Wilmington and back, twice and a 26.2-mile run from Lake Placid to Wilmington and back.
Thunder and lightning forced race officials to cancel the second loop of the swim for many of the age group, non-pro athletes.
Amsterdam's Jason Van Wie was the top area finisher, placing 239th overall with a time of 10:33.29. Broadalbin's Travis Mitchell was 399th overall with a time of 11:05.00, while Broadalbin's Stephen Tomlinson was 702nd with a time of 11:45.40.
Northville's Rob Whittaker was 807th overall with a time of 11:58.43, while Johnstown's Jeff Krempa finished 820th overall with a time of 11:59.46.
Other area finishers included Johnstown's Chad Kortz (1,199th, 12:43.17), Johnstown's Scott Simone (1,201st, 12:43.30), Johnstown's Rebecca Weiderman (1,359th, 2:59.39), Amsterdam's Andrew Heck (1,444th, 13:09.52), Gloversville's Steven String (1,817th, 14:02.25), Gloversville's Elizabeth Argotsinger (2,115th, 15:11.59), Sprakers' Jamie Lawrence (2,161st, 15:23.59), Johnstown's Tracy Ringer (2,208th, 15:36.55)
The top male finisher was South Africa's Kyle Buckingham (8:38.43) and the top female finisher was American Amber Ferreira (9:31.28). The event featured 2,772 participants.
