The local racing family lost a good friend last year with the death of Bill Anagnostopulos.
The owner of the Winner's Circle restaurant stepped up with sponsorships on cars and sponsoring dashes for cash when the sprint cars ran at Fonda Speedway - among the many things he did behind the scenes without looking for recognition.
Saturday night at Fonda Speedway, friends of Anagnostopulos will host the inaugural running of the "Elimination Race in Honor of Bill Ag of the Winner's Circle."
Scott Friers, Mike Mallett and Holly Anagnostopulos are the driving forces behind the unique tribute race.
"Last year, Mike Mallet and I were trying to come up with some different ideas other than the typical dash-for-cash," Friers said. "We saw this at Big Diamond and the fans seemed to enjoy it, and it was something different. We though the fans and race teams here might enjoy this, too."
The event will pit the top five drivers in the modified points standings, and one driver voted in by the fans in two-lap, head-to-head races.
Heading into Saturday's race program, the top five include Bobby Varin, Stewart Friesen, Ronnie Johnson, Jeremy Wilder and A.J. Romano.
"I heard that Jeff Rockefeller is leading in the fan vote right now," Friers said. "But it is still wide open. Fans can vote on DirtTrackRacing.com. until 11 a.m. Saturday morning."
The six drivers will pit on the infield drag strip and draw numbers. The drivers picking one and two will lead off, with the winner returning to the infield to choose his next competitior.
"There will be a little gamesmanship for the drivers as they figure out who they want to race against," Friers said.
The winner of the first match-race will recieve $100 donated by Brian Griesel. The second winner will win $125 donated by One Small Step Walk for Layne Parks/Parks Companies Inc.. Race three will have $150 for the winner donated by Happy Harry and Shelly Shaffer, while Camp Can Opener donated $212 for the winner of race four.
The winner of the final race will receive $500 donated by DirTrackDigest.com.
"If a driver is lucky enough to win all five races he will receive $1,075," Friers said. "If you win one race, you get that money, and any driver who does not win a race will receive $50."
Also, during the modified feature there will be a $100 Hard Luck Award provied by Greg Clute, and the 20th-place finisher in the modified feature will recieve a $25 bonus donated by Eric and Sherry Gifford.
"Matt DeLorenzo has been absolutely incredible to work with on this," Friers said. "He thinks it is a great idea and has asked if there is anything he can do to help make this happen."
Also at Fonda on Saturday will be the on-track Meet-and-Greet for fans to get autographs and chat with their favorite drivers. Fonda will also host the Lightning Sprints for the second time this year ,and there will be a band playing prior to the race program.
Plus, it is Ladies Night, with ladies receiving $2 off a general admission ticket.
