Richard Lee Hughes, 67, formerly of New York City, passed away Monday, June 23, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, after a brief illness.
Born on May 11, 1947, in Amsterdam, NY, he was the first son of Lee and Caroline (Scofield) Hughes. Richard grew up in Broadalbin and graduated from Broadalbin Central High School in 1965 and St. Lawrence University in 1969. Richard was married to Alexandria (Halloran) Zander from 1969-1978 and had one son, Joshua Hughes. Richard served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era, attaining the rank of captain. He then pursued a career in the garment industry and finally as a private chef before retiring to the Dominican Republic in 2009. Richard will be most remembered for his generosity and love of all those who were part of his life.
In addition to his ex-wife and son, he is survived by his brothers, Todd (Broadalbin, NY) and John (Charleston, SC); two grandchildren, Sebastien and Astrid (Long Valley, NJ); and many other relatives and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, 62 Main Street, Newton, NJ 07860. A reception will follow immediately afterward. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Heart Association in his name.
