JOHNSTOWN - No Fulton County sheriff's deputy will wear badge No. 228 again.
It was worn by late Sheriff's Department Capt. Garth W. Hillier, who died July 8 at age 50 after a battle with cancer.
The Fulton County Board of Supervisors honored Hillier on Monday and passed a resolution retiring his badge No. 228.
"I don't believe we've ever done anything like that," Undersheriff Kevin Lenahan said Tuesday.
Sheriff Thomas Lorey was off this week and unavailable for comment.
County Administrator Jon Stead told supervisors Monday the county was recognizing "the passing of a very dedicated public servant."
The board conducted a moment of silence for the captain.
Stead read the resolution retiring badge No. 228, which noted Hillier's "affable personality and positive attitude inspired those around him."
The resolution stated Hillier joined the Fulton County Sheriff's Department as a corrections officer Aug. 19, 1985, and transferred to the Road Patrol Division as a deputy on May 13, 1986. He was promoted to corporal on Nov. 30, 1991, sergeant on Oct. 15, 1994, lieutenant on Jan. 1, 1999, and captain on Jan. 22, 2010.
The resolution said Hillier was "well known" for his development and operation of the Fulton County 911 Dispatch Center, and he served 18 years as a deputy fire-coordinator/civil defense director.
"Garth's vast knowledge of the Sheriff's Department and public-safety agencies countywide made him a vital link in the chain of dedicated emergency responders that save lives in Fulton County," the resolution stated.
Hillier, a Johnstown resident, also served the community as a volunteer, including with the Johnstown Memorial Day Parade Committee, Johnstown City Republican Committee, and the Fulton County Board of Elections as a vote counter.
"The Board of Supervisors hereby posthumously salutes Capt. Garth Hillier for his many contributions in service to the people of Fulton County," the resolution read. "That in the final gesture to memorialize his dedication to public safety, the board hereby authorizes the sheriff to declare Fulton County sheriff's badge No. 228 - Capt. Garth Hillier - retired in perpetuity."
