John Angelo LaMena Sr.

John Angelo LaMena Sr. passed away tragically and unexpectedly on June 26, 2014, due to a household accident with his partner Palma Nero by his side.

John Angelo LaMena Sr. was born in Johnstown, N.Y., to Anthony LaMena Sr. and Anna Viscusi LaMena on May 27, 1937. He was born the first of four children and spent his early years there, where he graduated from Johnstown High School in 1955. He received his undergraduate and master's degrees in education from Brooklyn College. He began his teaching career in the Brooklyn, N.Y., public school system before moving his family to Latham, N.Y., in 1966, where he continued to teach history for 31 more years at Shaker High School until his retirement in 1996. He was also a piano teacher to many children and adults throughout the capital for much of his adult life. John married his first wife, Apollonia Yacovelli, in August of 1962 and they had four children together, Anne, John, Laura and Anthony. They later divorced and he married his second wife, Diane Deeb, in 1979; they later divorced. He spent his latter years with his life partner, Palma Nero. He was an avid collector of things, especially of groceries as anyone that has been in his house can attest. He was a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge and St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He was a huge fan of the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts. He also loved to cook, and John and Palma enjoyed dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Angelo LaMena. He is survived by his four children: Anne LaMena Murray (Ed Brennan) of Albany, N.Y., John LaMena Jr. (Haiying) of Latham, N.Y., Laura LaMena-Coll (Robert) of Eugene, OR, and Anthony LaMena of Menands, N.Y.; one grandchild, Hailey Coll of Eugene, OR; his brother, Anthony LaMena Jr. (Jane) of Syracuse, N.Y.; his sister, Carmela Rosbach (Chris) of Gloversville, N.Y.; his beloved cousin, Paula Baldasarre of Latham, N.Y.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Reverend Dr. Anthony M. Barratt, pastor, for John and Palma on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Road, Latham. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY.

Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with John's family on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham.
