FM Summer Academy offers fun programs

June 6, 2014
The Leader Herald

For three weeks starting July 14, the Fulton-Montgomery Community College campus will come alive with fun and engaging programs for students entering grades three through nine. With more than 40 different programs, the FM Summer Academy is the place to be this summer.

Our wide range of courses ensures there is something to appeal to the diverse interests of every child. We offer a unique range of programming you will not find anywhere else locally. Where else can your child spend the morning learning how to cook and the afternoon perfecting their zombie make-up techniques? There are classes in American Sign Language, music, art, physical education, cosmetology and computer construction, as well as some funkier courses in zombie make-up, the Hunger Games, horses, local history and Zumba. There is an increase in the number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) courses offered this year. Our experienced instructors and friendly counselors will make sure your child's time spent at FM is an amazing and fun educational experience. For detailed descriptions of all 44 classes, please go to fmcc.edu.

The FM Summer Academy is extremely family friendly. In 2013, we lowered our cost to just $99 a week for a full-day program, making it a much more affordable option for area families. Students can be dropped off as early as 8 a.m. and picked up as late as 5 p.m. to accommodate working parents. Classes are one week long and run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., with a one- hour lunch/recess period between classes. To assist with such a low cost, we ask that children bring their own lunch. Campers will also receive a souvenir T-shirt.

Our pickup/drop-off location for the FM Summer Academy is Raiders Cove, the newest student lounge space on campus, located at the site of the former swimming pool in the physical education building.

Raiders Cove has a projection TV with an entertainment stage, ample seating, a pool and foosball table, and nine flat-screen TVs capable of playing all three Disney channels. Kids can't wait to get here in the morning and don't want to leave in the afternoon.

Janice Butler, an area parent who sent two children to the FM Summer Academy last year, speaks very highly of the program: "Both of my daughters really enjoyed the overall experience. The interaction of students from different communities is a refreshing change. The unique courses such as 'Hippie Week,' 'Cosmetology,' and 'Science can be Fun' kept them engaged. Every morning, they were very excited to attend and couldn't wait to tell us about their activities from the day. They are both looking forward to Summer Academy 2014."

All of the program descriptions, instructor information and registration forms can be found on FM's website at www.fmcc.edu by clicking on the "FM Summer Academy" link.

You can also call the Admissions Office at 736-3622, Ext. 8301, for complete details. Most programs have a maximum capacity of 16 students per session. Don't wait, sign your student up today for the FM Summer Academy.

Audrey Egelston is the FM Summer Academy coordinator.
