Capt. John Sira said this morning DiMezza struck his wife during an argument, causing minor injuries.
Police Chief Donald VanDeusen said the allegation alleges DiMezza struck the victim under the chin and left marks on her neck while trying to take a cell phone away from her.
Police said during the dispute which occurred late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning a laptop also was broken.
Sira said what exactly started the dispute remains unclear.
"Who knows what actually sparked it, but there is obviously some marital discord there," he said.
DiMezza was held in the department until morning arraignment by Acting City Court Judge Lisa Lorman.
DiMezza was released on his own recognizance to re-appear in City Court on July 7 at 9 a.m.
Judge Traci DiMezza was unavailable for comment on the incident this morning.
