BROADALBIN - Broadalbin-Perth and Females in Training (FIT) are seeking teams to participate in the second annual Patriot Bowl flag football tournament, scheduled for May 16 at 6 p.m. at Patriot Field.
Teams must have a minimum of six players; additional players, including "bench warmers," are welcome, organizers say.
Depending on the number of teams that register, the tournament format will be either double- or single-elimination, meaning all teams will be guaranteed at least one game.
Throughout the tournament, two games will run simultaneously on the field, which will be split at the 50-yard line.
The rules of flag football are similar to those of American football, with one major exception: Instead of tackling the ball carrier to stop a play, defensive players must steal one of three flags attached to a belt around the ball carrier's waist. Flag football players do not wear helmets or pads; players generally wear sneakers and casual athletic wear, although Patriot Bowl event organizers are encouraging teams to dress up: The team registration form states: "Have a theme, write on shirts, wear wigs, wear a team color, tie-dye your shirts, or just go simple and wear our team shirts," referring to the event t-shirt each participant will receive with registration.
Supporters can also order pre-sale tickets for $4 each; tickets will be available at the gate for $5 each. Proceeds from the Patriot Bowl will benefit families in the community who are dealing with serious illnesses.
In addition to the flag football action on the field, the event will also feature food, music, giveaways, raffles, children's games and a bounce house.
