Kathryn E. Van Arnam, 66, of Johnstown, N.Y., passed away April 27, 2014, at her home. She was born Nov. 11, 1947, in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of Paul T. and Madelyn Cromer Valachovic.
Mrs. Van Arnam was a graduate of Johnstown High School and received a BA from SUNY Potsdam. She did her graduate work at SUNY Albany. Kathryn was the Assistant Provost of the State University of New York Central Administration and was a substitute teacher at the former Jansen Elementary School in Johnstown. She retired in 2010. She was an active member of the Clio Study Club. Mrs. Van Arnam was the Dinosaur Lady at the Johnstown Summer Program for children. She had exquisite taste in cooking and flower arranging and loved her home in Johnstown.
Mrs. Van Arnam is survived by her husband, John Stephen Van Arnam of Johnstown, whom she married on Nov. 20, 1971; a son, John Simon Van Arnam of Durham, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Natalia Susan Van Arnam. She is also survived by two brothers, Thomas M. Valachovic of Johnstown, N.Y. and P. Edward Valachovic of Los Angeles, CA; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2nd, at the Ehle Funeral Home, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3rd. Cremation took place at Vale Crematory, Schenectady, N.Y. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Public Library or the charity of choic.
