JOHNSTOWN - The Fulton County Board of Supervisors last week set a public hearing for May 12 to reduce the number of elected county coroner positions from two to one.
The board will conduct a hearing at 1:30 p.m. that day at the County Office Building to pass a local law reducing the two regular elected coroner positions from two to one. At the same session, supervisors are looking to create one deputy coroner position, who answers to the sole elected coroner.
In reality, the county will then have two potential coroners at any given time, but current Coroner Margaret Luck would be the only elected coroner.
"I'm just glad to see they didn't eliminate it and go down to one coroner," said Gloversville 1st Ward Supervisor Marie Born.
The county had been operating with elected coroners Luck and Art Simmons, who resigned Dec. 31. Coroners serve four-year terms. The board's Public Safety Committee previously endorsed reducing the number of coroners in Fulton County from two to one. County officials have been preparing a job duties statement for a new position of deputy coroner, which would be an appointed employee.

The board waived the residency rule for the hiring of a part-time registered nurse in the Department of Social Services. It was noted a vacancy exists for the position and DSS Commissioner Sheryda Cooper has had difficulty hiring for the position from within Fulton County.
Appointed as alternate members to the Fulton County Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council were Danny Sowle and Kuntree Sweet.
Supervisors created a payroll-benefits administrator position in the county Personnel Department. The position would have a start rate of $28,900 per year.
The resolution notes that mandates of the federal Affordable Care Act have created additional work and this "specialized position" is needed to ensure to ensure the county's compliance. Work duties will include data collection, assisting with testing and reporting, transmitting information, and obtaining and maintaining an understanding of the Affordable Care Act's requirements and impact on the county.
