GLOVERSVILLE - The Gloversville Enlarged School District Board of Education adopted a $61.7 million budget Tuesday with a tax-levy increase of 1.66 percent.
The board unanimously adopted the proposed 2014-15 budget, which will go to a public vote May 20.
The budget maintains all academic programs while adding new courses and reinstating some programs that were cut in previous years.
"These additions will help broaden our students' educational experiences and allow them greater access to music and sports," said Superintendent Michael Vanyo.
According to Assistant Superintendent Steve Schloicka, the budget calls for a spending increase of 5.4 percent, or about $3.1 million.
The tax-levy increase is $228,201. The total levy is $14 million.
Previously, the school board considered a tax-levy increase of $343,302, or 2.5 percent. However, Gloversville received more state aid than the district previously estimated. The district will receive $40.9 million in total aid, which includes building aid, an increase of 4.2 percent over 2013-14, according to the new state budget.
According to a presentation from Schloicka, state aid will cover 64.5 percent of the 2014-15 budget.
"Because the state budget included almost $750,000 more in state aid than we originally anticipated, we were able to reduce the tax-levy increase from our initial proposal, and we won't have to deplete our reserves as we had planned before the state budget was finalized," Vanyo said.
The tax-levy increase is below the state-imposed cap.
If voters approve the budget, the district said it will ramp up its literacy efforts, buy equipment for its middle school pre-engineering program, and offer business and marketing courses in the high school to better prepare students for college and careers.
Voters will use polling places at Gloversville High School and the Bleecker Town Hall for the May 20 vote. Residents who previously voted at the elementary schools for district-related voting will vote in the GHS gymnasium. Polling hours have been expanded by five hours to 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
