Shirley Jean Chase Purcell, 81, of Gloversville, N.Y., passed away April 3, 2014.
She was born July 5, 1932, in Fabius, N.Y., the daughter of Herbert D. and Vivian Waters Chase. She was a graduate of Fabius Central School in 1949 and SUNY Cortland in 1952. Mrs. Purcell was united in marriage to Raymond F. Purcell Sr. and he passed away Nov. 28, 2010. She taught school in DeRuyter, N.Y., Waynesville, Mo., Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Johnstown, N.Y., retiring in 1990. Mrs. Purcell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown, the Fulton Co. Retired Teachers Assoc., the N.Y. State Retired Teachers Assoc., Wells House Auxiliary, the Shirley Luck Senior Center and Alban Hills Country Club. She was also a member of the Friends of the Johnstown Library and served on the library Board of Directors and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Fulton County Teachers Federal Credit Union.
Mrs. Purcell is survived a daughter, Christine E. Purcell of Johnstown, N.Y.; two sons, Raymond F. (Diane) Purcell Jr. of Gloversville, N.Y. and Dennis R. (Debbie) Purcell of Johnstown, N.Y. Also surviving are two grandsons, Michael and Scott; and a brother, Richard D. Chase of Gainesville, Fla.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ehle Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2014. Cremation will take place at Vale Crematory, Schenectady, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to The William A. Wright Scholarship Fund, c/o Hanz Litz, Johnstown High School.
