Mary Louise Wood Hoff

Mary Louise Wood Hoff, age 76, of Washington, DC, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 19, 2014.

She was born February 1, 1938, in Gloversville, the daughter of Edward and Camilla Wood. She was a 1956 graduate of Gloversville High School and 1960 graduate of Radcliffe College. After earning a master's degree in history and secondary education from Yale University in 1961, she taught American history at high schools in Stamford, CT and Eastchester, NY. In 1965, she moved to Washington, DC to work at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and then as a private educational consultant. She provided financial planning services to the elderly and served on the boards of Georgetown Day School and Iona Senior Services.

Mary Louise was generous, spirited and funny, passionate about current affairs, and a friend to underdogs everywhere. She was active at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC, where she volunteered for the homeless and served as a deacon. She served on the boards of Georgetown Day School and Iona Senior Services, Washington, DC.

She enjoyed cooking, playing the piano and organ, and traveling, and she was an avid gardener who especially loved her daffodils.

Mary Louise is survived by a daughter, Lydia Stewart Hoff Kris (Gary Scott Kris) of White Plains, NY; a son, Derek Seabury Hoff (Jeanine Kelly Stefanucci) of Salt Lake City, UT; and two grandsons, Owen Stewart Kris and Milo Scott Kris.

A memorial service will be held Monday, March 31, 2014, 10 a.m. at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 19, 2014, 1 p.m. at the Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church, Mayfield, with the Rev. Bonnie Orth officiating. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gloversville High School (Mary Louise Wood Hoff Memorial Fund), Habitat for Humanity and/or Heifer International.
