BROADALBIN - Part of the proposed town park could be subdivided and possibly used for a new ambulance corps headquarters, officials said Tuesday.
Travis Mitchell, an engineer with Environmental Design, spoke with members of the Town Board on Tuesday about the progress on the town park.
The 22-acre site, at Route 29 and Honeywell Corners Road, will be the town's only park. Plans for the park call for it to include two soccer fields, two baseball fields and a playground area, access roads and parking.
Before the construction of the park can begin, Mitchell said a state Environmental Quality Review would need to be done.
According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, SEQR requires the sponsoring or approving governmental body to identify and mitigate the significant environmental impacts of the activity it is proposing or permitting.
According to Mitchell, the town would be the lead agency in the review process.
Mitchell suggested - after previous discussions with members of the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps - 1.7 acres of the park not being used could be subdivided. The subdivision, located in the Northeast corner of the park, could hold a new ambulance center for the corps.
Sam Jackling, the treasurer for the BVAC, said the current headquarters is cramped, requiring more space for records, ambulances and crew space. The plans for the new headquarters are not yet finished, he said.
In December, the state announced the town would receive a $500,000 grant for the park project. At the time, town officials said the site was shovel-ready and work on the park could start in the spring. Officials previously said about $115,000 also had been generated for the park through fundraisers. Officials previously said the town would continue to raise money to pay for the park project, which could cost up to $1 million.
According to Jackling, the ambulance corps will need to raise their own funds for the headquarters.
