JOHNSTOWN - The Fulton County Office for Aging will conduct an event later this month - March for Meals - to raise community awareness about senior citizen nutrition.
OFA Director Andrea Fettinger told the Board of Supervisors' Human Services Committee on Tuesday that every couple years, the OFA partners with the national March for Meals initiative.
The effort raises awareness about senior hunger and nutrition. The event will include a tour of the Kingsboro Catering kitchens.
The OFA event will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 27. It will highlight nutrition services available through the OFA Meals for Seniors program. The event will highlight meal preparation at Kingsboro Catering on East State Street in Gloversville, delivering a route and serving a meal at a dining site.
"It's really a fun event, as well, because you get to see the whole process," Fettinger said.
Every year, she said, her agency serves an estimated 100,000 meals to more than 700 people in the area.
Fettinger urged county supervisors and the public to participate in the March 27 event.
She said letters will be sent to community leaders, including county supervisors, and members of city councils and town boards inviting them to participate.
She said not only is this event an opportunity to highlight the OFA Nutrition Program, it is also a time to recognize how the program helps seniors of all ages remain at home independently for as long as possible.
She said this prevents premature placement into an adult- care facility. She said the event also will be an opportunity for new legislators to meet their constituents.
