SCHAGHTICOKE - The Canajoharie girls basketball team set top-seeded Hoosic Valley back on its heels early in Friday's Section II Class C quarterfinal game at Hoosic Valley High Central School.

The eighth-seeded Lady Cougars tied up the Hoosic Valley offense in the opening quarter, but disastrous second and third quarter proved to be their downfall as the Lady Cougars finished their season on the short end of the 48-18 final score.

"We came out with lots of energy and did a great job against them in the first period," Canajoharie coach Joe Fowler said. "We just weren't able to keep up that pace and it got away from us tonight."

Sparked by a smothering, pressing defense, the Lady Cougars turned early turnovers into points, with Alexis Kane and Lauren Balfe delivering from behind the 3-point arc.

However, the Lady Indians finished the quarter on a strong note to hold a 10-8 advantage after eight minutes of play.

Tough defense forced multiple turnovers for both teams in a low scoring second quarter.
