CASTLETON-ON-HUDSON - The Mayfield girls basketball team saw its season come to an end Friday with a 73-34 loss to Greenwich in the Section II Class C quarterfinals at Maple Hill High School.

The 11th-seeded Lady Panthers upset sixth-seeded Waterford in the opening round to reach the quarterfinals, while third-seeded Greenwich rolled to a 73-33 win over Schoharie in its postseason opener.

Mayfield trailed 33-6 after the first quarter to the Witches, who improved to 15-5 overall.

The Lady Panthers' quarterfinal matchup was decided early on, as the Lady Witches began the game on a 29-2 run. Greenwich's top two scorers, Alexis Case and Mariah Linnett, scored 10 and 14, respectively, during the scoring burst. The Witches blew past Mayfield (11-9 overall) with ease and scored 27 of their first quarter points by way of layup or free throw. Samantha Whitehouse and Maddie Schafer each hit from downtown in the frame for Greenwich.

Greenwich's full-court press gave Mayfield fits, leading to 19 first-half Lady Panther giveaways. The Witches slowed down their offense in the second quarter and moved to a half-court trap, affording Mayfield some breathing room. Greenwich won the quarter 12-9 and carried a 55-24 lead into the halftime break. Despite the mounting deficit, the Lady Panthers stayed positive.

"This team has always shown a lot of heart and a lot of dedication throughout the year," said Mayfield head coach Brian Moore. "Between quarters and halftime every single one of them was saying we can get back in this game. They [fought] until the last minute."
