MAYFIELD - A Mayfield man was struck and killed by a car on Route 30 Thursday morning while helping a relative repair a tire, state police said this morning.

State police spokesman Mark Cepiel said Charles Van Every, 64, was pronounced dead at the accident scene, near the town border with Northampton, south of Bunker Hill Road.

He said the accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. One of Van Every's relatives, Darcy Lawton, 37, of Mayfield, was driving south on Route 30 when her left front wheel fell off the vehicle and Cepiel said Van Every came to help her change it.

Both were struck when a southbound vehicle driven by Robert Haner, 84, of Northville, veered toward the shoulder, Cepiel said.

Lawton was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, including a fractured leg, Cepiel said.

No tickets have been issued, Cepiel said.

"The situation is still under investigation and the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is involved with that so they will reconstruct the situation," Cepiel said.

He would not comment on why Haner reportedly veered toward the shoulder.

Sections of Route 30 between Bunker Hill Road and County Highway 123 were closed during the investigation.

The Ambulance Service of Fulton County and Mayfield and Northville firefighters also responded to the accident.
