By SHAUN ANICH (sports@leaderherald.com) , The Leader Herald

CANAJOHARIE - Led by Lauren Balfe's 12 points and 10 rebounds, the eighth-seeded Canajoharie Lady Cougars cruised past the ninth-seeded Berne-Knox-Westerlo Lady Bulldogs 51-35 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class C sectional tournament.

In a matchup between WAC North and South, the Lady Cougars out-rebounded BKW by 10 and forced 34 turnovers. Canajoharie was victorious by a score of 42-32 when the teams met in a WAC crossover game last week and they performed even better this time around.

Balfe scored from everywhere in the first quarter. The senior hit from downtown, converted a two-point jumper, and scooped in a layup for seven first-frame points. Four girls combined to give Canajoharie a 12-1 lead midway through and a 14-4 lead at the end of the quarter.

Monique Britton scored all four of BKW's points in the quarter. The freshman finished with a game-high 19 points and was a lone bright spot for the Lady Bulldogs.

BKW cut into Canajoharie's lead in the second quarter from the free throw line. The Lady Bulldog's got to the line for 17 attempts, converting on 11 of them. Britton and Shea Murphy each hit four while the Lady Cougars converted three of five.

Balfe scored five more in the third quarter, including another three-pointer, as BKW fell silent. Britton and junior varsity call-up Kristen Norray each made field goals, but the Lady Bulldogs were outscored 15-7 in the frame and found themselves trailing by 13.
