BROADALBIN - After building an 11-point lead late in the first half, the Broadalbin-Perth Patriots found themselves looking for a knockout punch to stop a late-game rally from the Schuylerville Black Horses.

With 1:42 left in regulation they got it.

The Black Horses trimmed B-P's advantage to six points and had momentum swinging their way when senior co-captain Andre Taylor stepped back, hit a 3-pointer that dampened Schuylerville's spirit and settled the Patriots down to close out the 63-56 victory in the opening round of the Section II Class B tournament.

"It [the shot clock] was at about 10 seconds so I knew I had to shoot the ball," Taylor said. "Every time I had been driving so he [Dante Langley] kind of backed up on me so I shot the ball."

Taylor finished the night with a game-high 31 points to help advance the sixth-seeded Patriots to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 15 Hudson.

The Blue Hawks stunned No. 3 Cohoes 58-57 with Gerell Young hitting a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for the win.

"I don't think we came in here tonight thinking this was going to be an easy game and there aren't going to be," Broadalbin-Perth coach Tucker Gifford said. "For anybody to win four in a row in this bracket it is going to be well deserved. We look forward to moving on and playing Friday night."

Schuylerville got on the board first with Clayton Patrick hitting a 3-pointer that was answered by the Patriots' Ryan Dingman. Langley and Taylor exchanged baskets before B-P was able to gain a slim 19-16 advantage at the end of the opening period.

Taylor sparked a 7-2 run early in the second quarter, forcing Schuylerville to call a time out.

The Patriots used the opportunity to gear up their high-intensity defense, forcing five turnovers and multiple disruptions to the Black Horses offense for a 7-0 run.

Schuylerville recovered in the final seconds of the half to cut B-P's lead from 13-9 at the break.

"We got a lot of steals but I don't think we really made them pay at the other end," Gifford said. "Steals and turnovers need to convert into points and they didn't and that really kind of hurt. We need to take better advantage of that Friday night."

Schuylerville kept its momentum going in the opening two minutes of the third quarter with a 6-0 run to bring the lead to within three points.

Taylor and Skyler Bateman exchanged field goals before Taylor hit a 3-pointer to again give the Patriots some breathing room. Preston Taylor then hit a 3-pointer and Andre completed a three-point play to take the lead back up to 11 with 2:03 left in the quarter.

Duilli Griffen and Zach Pierce connected on back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute of the period to cut Broadalbin-Perth's advantage to 48-40 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Andre Taylor hit 3 of 4 free throws and Preston Taylor 1 of 2 in the opening 90 seconds of the fourth quarter to pump the lead up to 12, 52-40 before the Horses got eight unanswered points to bring the Patriots' lead back to four 52-48 with just under five minutes to play.

Chris Natoli picked up his game in the low post for the Patriots, powering his way to four points and three rebounds to help keep the Horses at bay and help kept the Patriots in front 58-50.

Schuylerville kept the pressure on the Patriots until Andre Taylor hit key 3-pointer with 1:42 remaining.

Natoli also stepped up big in the closing minutes, especially wrestling a defensive rebound away from a pair of Schuylerville players after three-straight misses on 3-point attempts to help seal the victory.

Andre Taylor collected 10 rebounds to go with his 31 points and Natoli pulled down 12 rebounds and had three steals to go with seven points.

"We rode Andre all night especially when some of our other guys were having an off night," Gifford said. "He stepped up when we needed him to. He is our team captain, our team leader and our main senior and we rode him to a first-round victory. Chris Natoli was a beast on the boards tonight. Sectional wins are tough to come by and you need some guys to step up and fortunately we had a couple guys do that."

Langley finished the night with 15 points for Schuylerville and Cameron Cook chipped in with 14.

"At this point of the season you can game-plan for teams as well as you can but you are going to stick to the basics of what worked well all season," Gifford said. "They got hot, but overall I thought we did a good job tonight. We need the guys who played well tonight to keep going and the guys who had an off night tonight, well guess what, Friday night is your night."
