Melvin R. Rose

Melvin R. Rose, 87, former resident of Route 30A, Fultonville, passed away Friday at the Glendale Nursing Home in Glenville, N.Y. his last residence was Clare Bridge Residence in Schenectady for the past six months.

Born July 6, 1926, in Charleston, New York, he was the son of the late Jay and Ophelia VanderVeer Rose. He was a Fultonville resident for over 65 years and attended schools in Fultonville.

Melvin was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of WW II, where he served with the 63rd Troop Carrier Squadron stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations.

He was employed by the former Bauder Gas Company in Fort Plain; Gold Star Homes in Randall and he last worked for Agway of Amsterdam, retiring in 1988. Melvin was a former volunteer member of the Aetna Engine Company.

Over the years, he enjoyed fishing, camping in the Adirondacks, bowling, carpentry and making toys for his grandchildren, boating and waterskiing. He and his wife Dorothy enjoyed square dancing with a close circle of friends and enjoyed listening and dancing to the old style country music together. They spent many summer weeks in York Beach, Maine, and traveled south in their RV to spend winters in Florida for many years.

On July 3, 1948, he married the former Dorothy A. Friers, who passed away on June 17, 2012. Melvin was also predeceased by his son, Melvin R. Rose Jr.; and his brother, Wilbur Rose. Survivors include his son, Jeff (Mary Lou) Rose of Rochester; his daughter, Gail Kinnie of Amsterdam; a brother, Archie (Dolores) Rose of Broadalbin; four grandchildren, Carissa (Brian) Smolyn, Nicole Kinnie, Kevin Rose and Bryan Rose; two great-grandchildren, Emma Rose Smolyn and Camden Smolyn; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at 12 noon at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, with the Rev. Nancy Pullen officiating. Family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Burial of Melvin's cremated remains will take place in spring at the Maple Avenue Cemetery in Fultonville with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Melvin's memory for children's Christmas toys to the Aetna Engine Company, P.O. Box 312, Fultonville, NY 12072.
