Richard Owen Belfance, 89, of St. Hwy 30, Amsterdam, passed away Thursday evening, February 6, 2014, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Pattersonville, N.Y., he was the son of the late Charles Albert and Luetta (Bennet) Belfance. He was a lifelong area resident who attended Pattersonville schools until sixth grade, when he went on to help his family and work on the family farm. Richard was an excellent mechanic and loved restoring old cars in his spare time. He was employed at various garages in the area until 1972, when he opened his own business at his residence for over 45 years. In his later years Richard enjoyed riding around on his tractors and could often be seen sitting out in front of his home. He also enjoyed getting in a car and going for a nice ride. Richard will always be remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humor.
He married Elizabeth I. Fox on August 16, 1952. She predeceased him in September of 2008. Richard is survived by daughters, Irene E. Hayes (Butch) of Saranac, N.Y., Barbara J. Saul (Ed) of Mayfield, Rebecca J. Trombetta (Mark) of St. Johnsville and Kathy J. Lawson (Robert) of Amsterdam; his son, David C. Belfance of Perth; sisters, Edna Phelps, Alberta Wauffle and Naiomi Sokalski; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and special friends, Fran and Bruce also survive.

Richard was predeceased by not only his wife and parents, an infant daughter, Penny Belfance; but also his sisters, Marion Blakeslee, Ellen Baran, and Irene Belfance, who passed away at a very young age.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Betz, Rossi, & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY 12010 on Thursday, February 13, 2014. A service will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held at the convenience of Richards' family.
