Richard H. Stearns, 61, of James St., Amsterdam, passed away suddenly Friday, January 31, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, surrounded by his loving family

Born in Amsterdam on July 27, 1952, a son of the late Robert and Jessie Carter Stearns. He was a lifelong area resident and was a 1970 graduate of Fonda-Fultonville Central High School.

Mr. Stearns was a 22 year veteran of the Amsterdam Police Department retiring as an investigator in 1996. While in the department he was a member of the police dive team and served alongside many different agencies. He also served as president of the PBA. Following his retirement he was employed by St. Mary's Hospital as a network computer specialist, from which he had since retired.

Richard enjoyed riding motorcycles with his wife, traveling, being with his family, especially his children and grandchildren, taking family vacations and enjoying special times spent with his wife on Anna Maria Island, Florida.

Survivors include his loving wife, Carol Bardascini Stearns, whom he married on April 23, 1994. In addition to his wife, survivors include his sons, David J. (Amy) Stearns of Hagaman, NY, Michael A. Stearns (Meagan Litchfield) of Amsterdam, NY. Other children include, Christine DePalma and Lisa Stearns and, Brian and Donald Stearns; 11 grandchildren including a very special grandson, Caiden Anthony Stearns, who was Poppa's pride and joy; mother-in-law, Nina Bardascini of Amsterdam; sisters, Cherie (Steve) Tedesco and Ellen Gillen of Johnstown, NY; brother-in-law, David Bardascini of Broadalbin, NY. Several nieces and nephews including special nieces and nephews, Glenn, Peggy and Cody Smith, Amber, Cristian and Lionel Luduena of Las Vegas, NV and Susan and Matthew Armer of Ballston Spa, NY; lifelong friend, Wayne Lampman. MJB and GP you were loved!! Predeceased by siblings, Ret. Detective Lieutenant John Stearns, Linda Rohlman and Bobbie Aldi; father-in-law, Anthony Bardascini. Richard also leaves behind his two wheeled companions, crown, cold steel, coffee and Keurig machine.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014, at 4:13 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hunters Hope Foundation in memory of Richard Stearns for John D'Amico, P.O.
