Donald E. Shaffer, age 84, of Johnstown, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.
He was born on May 5, 1929, in Glendale, New York, the son of the late Elmer Shaffer and Ruth Victoria Eccleston Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer was a high school graduate and valedictorian of his class. He honorably served in the National Guard. Donald was employed as a tool and die maker for EFKAY Tool & Die Company of Lindenhurst until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the National Campers & Hikers Association and was an avid bird watcher.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Mason Shaffer, whom he married in 1956; one son, Glenn Shaffer and his companion Barbara Leduc of Gloversville; two daughters, Donna Hayes and her husband David Sr. of Canajoharie and Karen Dotterwich and her husband James of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Heather (Joseph) O'Field, Britney Schlesier and her companion Spencer Van Alstyne, Amanda (Brandon) Ambrosino, Bryan Schlesier and Brett Schlesier; one great-grandchild, Theo Isaac Ambrosino; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown, with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams officiating.
Visitation for friends and family will be on Saturday prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
