Braves cruise past Ichabod Crane

January 30, 2014
By SHAUN ANICH (sports@leaderherald.com) , The Leader Herald

FONDA - The Fonda-Fultonville Braves held the Ichabod Crane Riders to just 13 second-half points Wednesday, easily cruising to a 58-34 victory in a Colonial Council matchup at Fonda-Fultonville High School.

While it was Fonda-Fultonville's defense that reigned supreme in the second half, it was their offense that was firing on all cylinders in the first half Wednesday. Zach Valachovic scored the first four points of the game for the Braves (5-8 overall, 3-6 Colonial) before big man Will Turner got going underneath. Turner scored 16 points the first half, including nine of Fonda-Fultonville's last 11 of the first quarter.

While the first half was business as usual for the Braves' leading scorer, Ichabod Crane registered their first basket of the game in a more unconventional fashion. Standing near the top of the key, Mike Ferrari let a hard pass glance off his fingertips before caroming off the backboard and into the hoop to give Ichabod Crane their only lead of the game at 2-1.

Fonda-Fultonville snuck into the lane for easy hoops throughout the first half. With the defensive attention fully on Turner, Mace Madore and Cam Ives combined for 10 second-quarter points from close range. Excellent ball control also was a factor in Fonda-Fultonville's first half success. The Braves turned the ball over just four times in the half while Ichabod Crane gave the ball away on 10 occasions.

Armed with a 34-21 lead at the start of the third quarter, Fonda-Fultonville began the period on an 8-0 run to double up Ichabod Crane's point total before dramatically slowing down the pace of the game. Valachovic and Russ Williams both knocked down threes in the quarter for the Braves.

The Riders didn't tally their first point of the half until Seth Scarano hit a free throw with 1:36 remaining and finished with just four points in the quarter. Williams and Billy Yesse combined to end the game on a 7-0 run, making the 24-point winning margin the largest of the game for the Braves.

Turner was quiet in the second half for Fonda-Fultonville, tallying just three points to finish with 19 and three rebounds. Ives finished with 10 rebounds for the Braves, while Calkins grabbed seven rebounds.

For Ichabod Crane, Scarano led the way with 13 points while Will Niemeyer's seven rebounds led an otherwise listless effort on the glass. The Braves out-rebounded the Riders 37-23.

Fonda-Fultonville will look to put together a winning streak when they travel to Cobleskill to face the 1-13 Bulldogs tomorrow at 7 p.m.
