CHEERS - To those who step up. Here is your chance to be a part of the governmental workings of Gloversville, to contribute your knowledge and make a difference, a chance for business people to become involved with local government. There are vacancies on the following boards: Planning, Recreation, Ethics, Historic Preservation, Zoning Board of Appeals and Transit Commission. Applications can be picked up at the city clerk's office or downloaded from the city's website. There has to be 14 people who are willing to step up.
JEERS - To a non-welcoming mat. While many people are taking the time to digest Gov. Andrew Cuomo's budget message, which does include some positive proposals, some people are still questioning the words he spoke in a radio interview a week ago. During the interview, he suggested Republicans are in the midst of a split and conservatives are working against moderate Republicans. He stated, "Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves," and went on to say, "Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that's who they are and they're the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York because that's not who New Yorkers are." To be fair, a spokesman for the governor has said the comments had been "repeatedly taken out of context - what he actually said was that the state is a moderate political state with all views welcome." We wonder if those words will be on a welcome mat soon.
CHEERS - To those who brave the elements. We may get a reprieve from the latest cold snap, but another is surely waiting in the wings to enter the 2014 winter stage. They can't be cheered enough, those who have to work outdoors who must protect themselves against the risk of frostbite or hypothermia. These people are police officers, firefighters, public works crews, utility workers, funeral staff, farmers, plumbers and, yes, newspaper carriers, just to name a few. We could add many more to the list. Those of us who shiver in the bone-chilling cold as we race from car to home, we say thank you.
