AMSTERDAM - A woman stole more than $50,000 over several years from her employer, beer distributor Bartyzel Inc., state police said Wednesday.

Theresa A. Carter, 51, of Amsterdam was charged with second-degree grand larceny.

Carter was arraigned in City Court and sent to the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

In an email, state police spokesman Mark J. Cepiel said Carter was "one of a few who worked in the office and one of her duties was to take in the cash and checks from the drivers."

The business discovered the situation with Carter itself and then reported it to state police, he said.

Cepiel said Carter was employed at Bartyzel for about five years.

Bartyzel did not return a call seeking comment.

Carter is scheduled to appear in Amsterdam Town Court on Feb. 13.
