FORT PLAIN - The Fort Plain Lady Hilltoppers trailed the Bishop Gibbons Golden Knights at halftime, but came back to win their first overtime game of the season 52-51 at Harry Hoag Elementary School in Fort Plain.
Even though Bishop Gibbons owns a paltry 3-11 record, Fort Plain head coach Phil Karker knew they would represent a true challenge for the Lady Hilltoppers due to the ferocity of the league they play in.
"We knew that they, being a Big 10 team, were going to be a lot better than what their record showed," said Karker. "They play against top-notch competition. Their size and speed and quickness were a lot more than what we're used to seeing in the WAC."
Fort Plain (7-3 overall, 5-2 WAC) was up to the challenge early, outscoring Bishop Gibbons 10-6 in the first quarter on the strength of seven points from Abby Boyer.
Talya Williams got hot for the Golden Knights in the second quarter. Williams scored 11 points, including a basket from downtown, before going on to finish with a game-high 31.
With the game tied at 28 heading into the fourth quarter, Fort Plain kept themselves in it from the free throw line. Boyer went seven of eight from the line in the frame while Haley Kilmartin made five free throws and a three-pointer. Paris Jarrell made her second three of the game in the fourth quarter for Bishop Gibbons to keep pace. Both teams finished the quarter with 15 points to force overtime.
Williams scored all eight points in the overtime period for Bishop Gibbons, but Haley Kilmartin was the hero Saturday. With the score tied at 51, Kilmartin missed the first of two free throws before converting the second to give the Lady Hilltoppers a 1-point lead. Bishop Gibbons had a shot to win it at the other end but couldn't get it to fall.
Kilmartin's game-winning foul shot capped off a 20-point game for the lone senior on the roster. Boyer sunk 16 free throws on her way to a team-high 26 points.
"It was a challenge for our kids today to try to play on a Saturday afternoon and try to see where we are and how far we have to go yet," said Karker. "It was a good win for us, plus it's always fun to get that first overtime game out of the way in case you have one later on that's a little more important."
The Lady Hilltoppers, who have won four straight games, will look for their fifth win in a row when they welcome the Canajoharie Lady Cougars on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
