U.S. Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, has nominated Nicholas Petricca of Mayfield to several of the nation's service academies.
Petricca was among several students from the region who were nominated by the congressman.
To earn the nomination of their member of Congress, students applying to service academies must submit a detailed application and meet eligibility requirements set through statute and regulations issued by each academy, a news release said.
Students can apply for a congressional nomination to study at the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Military Academy.
"These young men and women reflect the upstanding character and strong work ethic of New Yorkers," Owens said in the news release. "I am excited for the opportunities that await those selected to attend a service academy and earn commissions as military officers. I wish all of these students success and thank them for their commitment to serve and defend our nation."
Owens, a retired Air Force captain, nominated Petricca to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., the Military Academy at West Point and the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
