Hudson Falls posts Foothills win over Johnstown

January 9, 2014

JOHNSTOWN - A strong performance from its upper weights staked the Johnstown wrestlers to an early 15-6 lead over Hudson Falls.

However, the experienced wrestlers in the lower and middle weights for the Tigers got the job done, winning seven-straight matches on the mat en route to posting a 60-21 Foothills Council victory Wednesday night at Johnstown High School.

"Every dual meet is different and tonight it seems our inexperienced wrestlers matched up with their experienced ones," Johnstown coach Joe Morrison said. "That will happen, there is nothing you can really do about that. It is what it is. Our guys came in ready to wrestle and did wrestle well."

The Sir Bills picked up victories by pin fall from Austin Brand (182) and Ethan Hale (220), while Austen Manchester (195) won by decision and Joe Salatel (152) collected a forfeit.

Brand earned his pin throwing the Tigers' Victor Colio to the mat for the fall at the 1:48 mark in the first period.

Hale earned a takedown and two first-period back points before turning Hudson Falls' 220-pounder Chris Colio for the pin with 53 seconds remaining in the second period.

Manchester held a 5-3 advantage over Zack Girard in the 195-pound match before earning a third-period escape to close out the 6-3 decision.

In the 132 pound match, the Sir Bills' Peter Wilson and Tyler Colton were scoreless heading into the final two minutes. Colton worked his way off the bottom for a reversal late in the match and picked up a two-point nearfall to come away with the 4-0 decision.

"Pete flys under the radar in a lot of matches," Morrison said. "He is a tough, well-educated wrestler. It was one of those well-fought matches that goes down the wire."

The Sir Bills (0-8 overall, 0-3 Foothills) also got strong efforts from Marshall Manchester (170), Garrett Hadcock (285), Kyle Linart (113), Nate Dutcher (120), Anthony Mowery (138), Mason VanDusen (145) and Steve Forker (152).

"Hats off to Hudson Falls, they came ready to wrestle," Morrison said. "My guys showed a lot of improvement. We are still young and a very green team, but tonight kind of gave my guys a chance to see what's ahead in the class tournament. We just have to work from here."
