Dorothy H. Seelow

Dorothy H. Seelow, 84, "Dottie" formerly of Johnstown, NY, passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, 2014, at the Tidewell Hospice House in Venice, Florida.

Dorothy was born in Johnstown, NY on Jan. 9, 1929. She was the daughter of Harold and Genevieve Hutchens. Dorothy graduated salutatorian, Johnstown High School in 1946. She graduated Wheelock College with a B.S. in education in 1950. Dorothy taught kindergarten at Warren Street School in Johnstown between 1950 and 1953, followed by a year teaching in Los Alamos, NM and a year in Greenwich, CT. She returned to Johnstown NY, retiring from teaching in 1986.

Dorothy married Donald Seelow in 1975. Dorothy and Don spent their free time golfing, playing cards and frequenting their family camp in the Adirondacks. In 1996, Dorothy and Don moved to Fairwinds in Nokomis, FL.

An avid golfer, Dorothy was a member of the Pine Brook Golf Course in Gloversville, NY, served on the board of directors and held the honor of being Ladies Club champion nine times. Dorothy was a member of the Northeastern Women's Golf Association of NY as well as the Inter-County Golf League. Her greatest thrill was playing in an LPGA Pro-Am tournament. After moving to Florida Dorothy was a member of the Jacaranda West Country Club.

Dorothy loved to read and was a former trustee of the Johnstown Public Library. She was also a member of the Clio Club, the Aldine Society and the Burrough's Nature Study Club. In 1996 Dorothy and Don moved to Fairwinds in Nokomis, FL.

Dorothy was an active member at St. John's Episcopal Church in Johnstown, NY, and served on the Vestry. In Venice, FL, she was a member of the St. Mark's Episcopal Church and remained active with her home church and extended family.

In 2008, Dorothy moved to the Village On The Isle in Venice, FL. There she helped her husband Don during his last year at the Luke Haven Nursing Home. At VOTI, "Dottie" played lots of bridge, volunteered many hours and enjoyed the company and support of many wonderful friends, staff and caregivers.

Dorothy leaves behind brother, William Hutchens and wife Caryl of Fayetteville, NY; nephew, William Hutchens Jr. and wife Anna of Naples, FL; niece, Nancy Reif and husband Steve of Woodstock, CT; stepson, Daniel Seelow and wife Lisa of Amsterdam, NY and David Seelow of Latham, NY; and seven great nieces and nephews.

Services will be Jan. 10, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Venice, FL. A springtime memorial service will be at St. John's Episcopal Church in Johnstown, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Venice, FL, St. John's Episcopal Church in Johnstown, NY or the Johnstown Public Library.
