Joseph T. Melita Sr., age 91, of Johnstown, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2014, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.
He was born on June 29, 1922, in Gloversville, a son of the late Thomas J. Melita and Mary Mannino Melita.
Mr. Melita honorably served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He worked for many years as a self-employed Mason. Joseph was of the Catholic faith, a communicant of Holy Trinity Parish and was a member of the Johnstown V.F.W. and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworker, Local No. 2 of Albany. His hobbies included golfing, skiing, hunting, fishing and trapping.
Survivors include three sons, Daniel J. Melita of Tennessee, Michael J. Melita of Maine, and Joseph T. Melita, Jr. of Johnstown; two brothers, Anthony Melita of Gloversville and Salvatore (Marie) Melita of Johnstown; one sister, Minnie Melita of Keck Center; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Mary R. (Catucci) Melita, who passed on July 7, 2013; and two brothers, James Melita and Thomas J. Melita Jr.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2014, at Holy Trinity Church, Glebe Street, Johnstown.
Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, January 9, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown.
Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown in the spring.
