Mildred K. Zayicek

Mrs. Mildred K. Zayicek, age 88, died unexpectedly on Monday, December 30, 2013, at her home in Gloversville, NY.

She was born on October 15, 1925, the daughter of the late Rudolf and Marie Hrubsa Kumpan.

Mildred is survived by two sons, John D. Zayicek of Marietta, GA and Peter J. Zayicek and his wife Kathleen L. Zayicek and their daughter Kristina M. Zayicek of Niskayuna, NY; several nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and South Carolina.

Mildred was predeceased by her husband, John S. Zayicek, on March 3, 1994; and also by her sister, Rose Popolizio on January 19, 2010.

Mildred was born in New York City, and after graduating high school, there, she engaged in a modeling career at the RKO Chester Movie House in New York.

In 1947, Mildred moved to Gloversville, NY. On May 29, 1948, she was married to John S. Zayicek at St. Anthony's Church in Johnstown, NY.

Mildred retired from Fulton-Montgomery Community College in 1990, where she had served for many years as secretary to the president of the college.

After retiring Mildred rekindled her interests in the opera as well as attending the theater and Broadway plays and musicals in New York City.

She was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church, currently the Church of the Holy Spirit and its Sisters of the Holy Spirit.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2013, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 6, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville. The Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment will take place in the springtime at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078 or to St. Jude's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 3704, Memphis, TN 38103.
