William R. Shankland, 78, of Gloversville, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Bassett Health Care in Cooperstown following a long illness.
Born on January 3, 1935, in Gloversville, he was the son of the late Godfrey and Elinor (Robinson) Shankland.
One accomplishment that William was particularly proud of was his service to his country in the United States Army Security Agency for three years, serving two of them overseas in Germany.
Mr. Shankland was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2077 of Gloversville, American Legion Post 0137 of Gloversville and the Fulton County Disabled American Veterans Post 122. He was an active volunteer for over 12 years with Mountain Valley Hospice, and for over 10 years, he was a volunteer mediator for the Tri-County Mediation Center.
William enjoyed the outdoors; he loved fishing and camping. He was also a train enthusiast and was an avid motorcyclist.
Mr. Shankland is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Shankland of Gloversville; two sons, Carleton Shankland of Gloversville and Richard (Dianne) Shankland of Rome; two grandchildren, Jennifer Shankland and Benjamen (Abbey) Shankland; a great-grandson, Wyatt Brady Shankland; and his feline companion, Lilly.
In keeping with William's wishes, there will be no funeral service or visitation. Burial will take place in the spring at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
