Mr. Alfonso Provenzano, 89, of Julia Street in Amsterdam, passed away suddenly at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam on December 29, 2013, after he was stricken at home. He was born in Enfield, CT on February 8, 1924, the son of the late Salvatore and Maria Caramazza Provenzano.
Alfonso was raised in Amsterdam and attended the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He enlisted into the United States Army in October 1945 and served during World War II under General Patton in the 3rd Army 94th Division. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and worked in the automotive industry. He then owned and operated Al's Universal Auto Supply for many years. He most recently worked at Eagle Chevrolet of Johnstown, where he looked forward to going to work every day. He was known as a hard worker and inspiration; he motivated his coworkers and will be missed dearly by the many who knew him.
Al was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed spending time coaching and managing the Babe Ruth Baseball team for his children and the children who participated. Due to his passion for flying, he owned and flew his own plane. He also enjoyed riding and training horses and would often ride them in parades. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
His loving family includes: daughter, Diane Naughton (David Hassfurter) of Amsterdam; sons, Peter Provenzano of Broadalbin and James (Deborah) Provenzano of Baldwinsville, NY; grandchildren, Maria, Antonia, Lily, Alexa, Giana, Rocco and Lucia Provenzano. He is also survived by a brother, Anthony Provenzano of Amsterdam; and sister Anna Vilar of Ft. Meyers, FL; a sister-in-law, Katherine Meyers; nieces, Margaret LaSala and Linda Vilar, Lynn and James Meyers; and a nephew, Charles Provenzano.
Alfonso was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy May Lampman Provenzano, whom he married in 1972; along with his siblings, Nancy LaSala, Vicenza Weishaar, Charles Provenzano; and a niece, Rose Marie LaSala.
Family and friends are invited to visit on January 1, 2014, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Betz Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY 12010. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 2, 2014, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. John Medwid as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in Amsterdam. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
