GLOVERSVILLE - A Johnstown man who police say stole or tried to steal from several local businesses last week, including an attempt to steal a thousand dollars in DVDs from Walmart, was arrested Dec. 24, police said.

William H. Rourke Jr., 27, of 41 Parkwood Ave., Johnstown, was charged with grand larceny, a felony, and two counts of petit larceny, misdemeanors.

He is accused of stealing items from Walmart and Cumberland Farms Dec. 22 and Dollar General Dec. 24, police said.

Police said one of the petit- larceny charges followed an investigation into the theft of a cellphone from the Cumberland Farms on North Main Street on Dec. 22.

Authorities said Rourke also was one of two people who tried to steal DVDs from the Gloversville Walmart on South Kingsboro Avenue the same day.

The city Police Department said two men, including Rourke, tried to steal $1,000 worth of DVDs from Walmart.

After seeing the photograph of the suspects on TV news related to the theft at Walmart, police said, Cumberland Farms employees contacted police to report the same person stole a phone from their store.

City police Capt. John Sira said the department is still looking for Rourke's accomplice in the theft at Walmart. The other person is believed to be from the Northville area, but police are not releasing his name at this time, police said.

"There is one other guy we are in search of, but haven't [gotten] our hands on yet," Sira said.

He said Rourke didn't have an accomplice in the alleged theft of the phone at Cumberland Farms.

Police said the attempted theft at Walmart occurred around 1 p.m. Dec. 22.

Management stopped one man inside the store with a bag of DVDs and an employee grabbed the bag the second man was carrying. The suspect pulled on the bag in an attempt to avoid apprehension, causing the bag to rip open, police said.

The contents, which consisted of DVDs, fell out, police said.

Detective Sgt. Mike Jory previously said neither of the men got away with merchandise from Walmart.

Through surveillance footage from Walmart, police said they learned the two suspects arrived in a tan Chevy Blazer and fled the scene in the same vehicle.

Sira said Rourke was arrested by state police and charged with petit larceny after he allegedly stole items from the Dollar General store on Route 30A in the town of Johnstown on Dec. 24.

"The vehicle used in the theft at Dollar General was located in the city and stopped by our officers," Sira said. "The troopers were called in and charged him with the petit larceny for that theft. After talking to him, we also charged him for the other thefts. He was wearing the same jacket he was during the theft at Walmart."

Rourke was arraigned in City Court and sent to the Fulton County Jail.
