Lewis L. Sowle, better known as "Anvil Louie", died Tuesday morning, December 24, 2013, at the Edward L. Wilkinson RCHF in Amsterdam. He was 85.
Born in the town of Providence on June 29, 1928, he was a son of Erwin and Ruby Bradt Sowle and attended local schools. Louie was a lifelong area resident.
He was self-employed as a logger for many years. Louie was also a competitive lumberjack and won many trophies and awards at local events.
Mr. Sowle was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and spending time in the wilderness.
Survivors include two sons, Richard (Susan) Sowle of Galway and Vernon (Eileen) Sowle of Duanesburg; a daughter, Diane Sowle of Galway; a brother, Alexander Sowle of the town of Providence; four grandchildren, Shannon, Brittany, Jeremy, and Liza; two great-grandsons, Noah and Vann; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation will be performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. A private service will be held in the spring at Union Mills Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106, Johnstown, NY.
