James L. "Tacky" Thackrah, 71, of Amsterdam, passed away peacefully Thursday evening at St. Mary's Hospital with his wife of nearly 50 years by his side.
Born in Amsterdam on Jan. 8, 1942, the son of the late Frederick and Marion Pettit Thackrah, he was educated locally and lived here his entire life. James retired as a foreman in 2004 after a 37-year career with the city of Amsterdam with the Department of Public Works. In his spare time, he loved to refinish and restore antiques and furnishings and hunt and fish. He was a bowler with the Port Jackson League and was an avid wrestling enthusiast. Jim was a parishioner of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. On April 26, 1964 he was united in marriage to the former Joan Rigatti, who survives.
In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his son, Ernest F. Thackrah of Gloversville; his grandson Ryan Thackrah; brother in law John (Shirley) Rigatti; sister in law Marie Bramer as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister in law Germana "Gerry" and her husband, Richard Kaczor.
A prayer service will take place Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave. with Fr. John M. Medwid officiating. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Monday from 3:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment is in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, The Lexington Center or St. Mary's Church, all in care of the funeral home office.
