FONDA - After losing its season opener at Albany Academy on Tuesday, the Fonda-Fultonville wrestling team looked to bounce back against Mechanicville in its home opener Thursday.

The Braves made the most of their home-mat advantage, rolling to a 57-19 Colonial Council victory over the Red Raiders in the FFCS Elementary School gymnasium.

Fonda-Fultonville won 10 of 15 weight classes on its way to the victory, rebounding from its 51-30 loss at Albany Academy on Tuesday.

"If we wrestled like we did today on Tuesday, it probably would have been a closer match," Fonda-Fultonville coach Brent Becker said. "We had some first-match jitters."

The match began with a double forfeit at 99 pounds before Mechanicville took a 3-0 lead after a 15-10 victory by Dan Motta over the Braves' Clane Newcomer.

The Braves responded with 10 straight victories to take control of the match.

"We're young, but we'll be alright," Mechanicville coach Fred DeCelle said.

Kyle Gray started the run for FFCS, pinning the Red Raiders' Billy Callahan in 40 seconds at 106 pounds.

Kelsey Gray added a forfeit win at 113 pounds for Fonda-Fultonville before Jackson Simpson gave the Braves an 18-13 lead by pinning Mechanicville's Mike Ciccarelli in 1:38.

Thomas TenEyck (132 pounds) and Zack Phillips (138) followed with pins for FFCS over Ian Frament and Ryan Palmer in 2:29 and 31 seconds, respectively.

Mike Murphy collected a forfeit win at 145 pounds to give the Braves a 36-3 advantage.

Dom Mancini pinned the Red Raiders' Alex Hall-St. Gelais in 2:30 at 152 pounds, while Ryan Park followed with the Braves' fifth pin of the match, needing 4:38 to finish his match with Devin Gaudette at 160. Mancini's win was his 100th career victory.

Caleb TenEyck added a hard-fought 10-3 win over Mechanicville's Mark DeBates at 170 pounds, while Zak Shaw extended the Braves' lead to 57-3 by pinning Chris Karola in 3:40 at 182.

"We just bumped up too many guys, and we're young and inexperienced," DeCelle said.

Mechanicville, which topped Voorheesville 64-12 in its opener Tuesday, halted the Fonda-Fultonville win streak when Noah Perras outlasted Mitch Hayes, 5-3 at 195 pounds.

Dan Hayner added a forfeit win at 220 pounds for the Red Raiders, while Brandon Farrell made the final score 57-19 after pinning the Braves' Nate Rose in 52 seconds.

"Fonda-Fultonville is a good team," DeCelle said. "They got some quality kids back this year with their new coach."

Fonda-Fultonville (1-1 overall, 1-1 Colonial) is scheduled to travel to Little Falls for a non-league dual meet Tuesday, while Mechanicville (1-1 overall, 1-1 Colonial) will compete in the Mohonasen Tournament on Saturday.

"Every match, we're wrestling better and better," Becker said. "By the end of the season, we're hoping we won't be a team people want to wrestle. We'll see what happens."
