When considering where to go for outdoor fun this winter, don't forget to look at the local area.
There are so many activities and outdoor events, it is impossible to list them all.
However, some to consider include:
Snowboarding and downhill skiing. The operators of Oak Mountain Ski Center in Speculator have made a number of improvements to the facility, including adding a terrain park with 22 new features for snowboarders and skiers.
Of course, no one can forget about Royal Mountain Ski area, which has made a number of improvements, including to its snowmaking ability and its gladed trails.
If cross-country skiing is more your style, there is Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center. There is also ice skating, snowshoeing, snowtubing and kicksledding to try, while enjoying some Finnish-style hospitality.
Try the ice fishing. Even if you are not one of the 1,750 people who managed to snag a ticket to the soldout sixth annual Walleye Challenge on Jan. 25 on the Great Sacandaga Lake, there will still be plenty of time to get out on the ice this season.
There are plenty of places to try ice fishing. For a list, visit www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7733.html.
No list of winter activities would be complete without mentioning snowmobiling. As the Fulton County tourism website - www.44lakes.com - notes, there are 400 miles of trails to enjoy in the county.
There is no shortage of local activities and events coming to the area again this winter. So before heading out of the area in search of some fun, take a look and see what you can find locally. You will be pleasantly surprised.
