Stay sober behind wheel

December 3, 2013
The Leader Herald

With the holiday season upon us, it's appropriate to once again consider the very serious dangers of drunken driving and driving while impaired by drugs, be they illegal or prescription.

In 2012, there were 8,633 alcohol-related car crashes in New York state, resulting in 358 people killed and 6,303 injuries, according to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

The DMV also tracks drunken- driving incidents by county. In 2011, for which the latest data are available, there were 53 alcohol-related crashes in Fulton County, two of them resulting in deaths and 34 resulting in injuries. In Montgomery County, there were 54 alcohol-related crashes, 26 resulting in injuries, but thankfully, none causing fatalities.

These numbers are much too high. Driving impaired is simply a selfish and horribly reckless thing to do. People who plan to become intoxicated during the holidays should take a cab, travel with a designated sober driver or take advantage of special transportation services offered around Christmas and New Year's.

There's simply no excuse for acting irresponsibly.
