Richard R. Opalka Sr., 63, of State Highway 67, Johnstown, N.Y., passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, N.Y.
Born on July 30, 1950, in Amsterdam, N.Y., he was the son of William A. and Stella Wozniak Opalka. He was a 1969 graduate of Fonda-Fultonville High School and was a lifelong Johnstown resident.
Mr. Opalka was a dairy farmer and enjoyed growing and maintaining crops on his farm.
He had been employed for several years by Skiff's Dairy.
He enjoyed spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed bidding at local livestock and farm equipment auctions.
Mr. Opalka loved going to the local county fairs and tractor pulls. He never passed up a chance to spend time with his family and friends. He was an avid wrestling fan and liked watching the matches on television.
He had been a communicant of St. Stanislaus Church.
Survivors include his lifelong companion, Judith A. Studenic of Johnstown; son Richard R. Opalka Jr. and his wife, Alicia of Johnstown, N.Y.; daughter, Sherri Opalka of Phoenix, Ariz.; granddaughter, Haleigh Opalka of Johnstown; his beloved dog, Tyra (Ty Ty); sisters, Helen (Joseph) Buanno of Fort Johnson, N.Y.; and MaryAnn Biedermann of Salt Lake City, Utah; an aunt; nieces, nephews and many cousins.
A funeral home service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, with the Reverend O. Robert DeMartinis officiating. Calling hours will be held prior to the funeral service from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations may be made in his memory to Judith Studenic, 345 N. Perry St., Johnstown, NY 12095 to help the family with funeral expenses.
