John P. Fliegel

November 29, 2013
The Leader Herald

Mr. John P. Fliegel, 91, of Gloversville, passed away November 25, 2013, at Mountain Valley House. Mr. Fliegel was born May 26, 1922, in Gloversville, son of the late William and Florence Palmer Fliegel. John was educated in Gloversville schools and graduated from Gloversville High School in 1941, where he was an accomplished speed skater and baseball player. John played semi-pro baseball with the Johnstown AC'S for a time and enjoyed competitive softball for several years.

Quiet and unassuming, John led a simple life and was devoted to his family. He owned and operated J.P. Fliegel Company in Gloversville for many years thoroughly enjoying his work and customers. His community involvement included the Johnstown Moose Club, Concordia Club, the former Elks Lodge and Eagles Club of which he was a life member.

A long time Red Sox fan, John was also a former harness horse owner and racing fan. Perhaps some of his most comforting times were shared at the Caroga Lake camp his family has enjoyed for many years. John and his wife Isabel were the first couple married at the old Caroga Lake Chapel which took place on July 16, 1949. A thoughtful, kind man of integrity, a gentleman. He will be sadly missed.
