Mr. John P. Fliegel, 91, of Gloversville, passed away November 25, 2013, at Mountain Valley House.
Mr. Fliegel was born May 26, 1922, in Gloversville, the son of the late William and Florence Palmer Fliegel. John was educated in Gloversville schools and graduated in 1941 from Gloversville High School, where he was an accomplished speed skater and baseball player. John played semipro baseball with the Johnstown AC's for a time and enjoyed competitive softball for several years.
Quiet and unassuming, John led a simple life and was devoted to his family. He owned and operated J.P. Fliegel Company in Gloversville for many years, thoroughly enjoying his work and customers. His community involvement included the Johnstown Moose Club, Concordia Club, the former Elks Lodge and Eagles Club of which he was a life member.
A longtime Red Sox fan, John was also a former harness horse owner and racing fan. Perhaps some of his most comforting times were shared at the Caroga Lake camp his family has enjoyed for many years. John and his wife Isabel were the first couple married at the old Caroga Lake Chapel, which took place on July 16, 1949. A thoughtful, kind man of integrity, a gentleman. He will be sadly missed.
John is survived by his wife, Isabel Fear Fliegel of Gloversville, daughter Mary J. Day and son William P. Fliegel (Elizabeth), all of Gloversville. He is also survived by granddaughters Jessica Fielding (Eric) and Meredith Miles (Michael), as well as great-granddaughters Embree Fielding and Eva Miles. John is also survived by a niece, Susan Davis (Michael) of White Plains, and a nephew, Richard Shaffer (Barbara) of Galway. He was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Shaffer and Jean Fliegel; and a brother Edward Fliegel.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013, at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Reverend Dr. R.W. Williams officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, NY 12078.
