Amsterdam loses to Queensbury, 59-26

QUEENSBURY - In a game full of big plays, Queensbury posted a 59-26 victory over Amsterdam in the Section II Class A football semifinals Saturday at Queensbury High School.

The Spartans scored on six runs of 40 yards or more on their way to the win.

Brett Rodriguez opened the scoring for Queensbury, racing for a 71-yard touchdown run on the Spartans' second play from scrimmage.

Amsterdam's JV Valentin answered two plays later, catching a 46-yard pass from Julian Gallup to tie the game at 7-7.

The see-saw battle continued as Queensbury scored on a 54-yard run by Kalen Minott, who followed a 40-yard TD run to make it 21-7 after one quarter.

Amsterdam cut into the lead once again on the first play of the second quarter, which saw Bryan Stanavich scamper for a 78-yard touchdown run to make it 21-14.

The touchdown trading resumed with Eric Wettersten scoring on a 43-yard run for the Spartans, only to have Amsterdam's Stanavich answer with a 27-yard run.

Rodriguez hauled in a 32-yard pass from Aidan Switzer to close out the first-half scoring, making it 33-20 at the break.

In the second half, the Spartans took control, scoring four straight touchdowns to surge to a 59-20 lead.

Rodriguez scored on a 64-yard run for Queensbury in the third quarter.

Wettersten, Michael DiTroia and James Kassebaum scored fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 18, 17 and 40 yards, respectively, for Queensbury.

Hector Diaz scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Rugged Rams for the game's final points.

The Spartans also won the regular-season meeting between the teams, 48-28, on Oct. 4.

Queensbury (9-0) will face Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in the Section II Class A championship game next Saturday at Shenendehowa High School at 7 p.m.

Amsterdam finished its season with a 5-4 overall record.
