JOHNSTOWN - Construction of the Fulton County Airport's new $212,000 automated weather observation station is under way and may be finished by December, a county official said.
"The AWOS project at the airport is actually starting, as we speak," Planning Director James Mraz told county supervisors Monday.
In his report to the Board of Supervisors' Buildings and Grounds-Highway Committee, Mraz highlighted several events and projects at the airport.
The county's 2013 capital budget contains an appropriation for the purchase and installation of the weather station at the airport off Route 67 in the town of Johnstown. Local pilots have told county officials the weather data would be helpful for landing and taking off at the airport. The county previously awarded a $190,420 bid to O'Connell Electric of Victor, Ontario County, for construction of the AWOS project.
Fulton County has about $600,000 in non-primary entitlement funds available from the Federal Aviation Administration for projects at the airport. Those funds pay for 90 percent of a project's cost. The state pays for 5 percent, and the county pays 5 percent.
Mraz said a preconstruction meeting was held Sept. 23. He said electrical cables will start to be run this week for the weather station, although it will be four to six weeks until the station actually arrives for final installation.
In other airport activities:
The committee authorized a $6,000 contract with Stanwyck Avionics for operation and maintenance services of the non-directional beacon and the automated weather observation station at the airport. The contract runs throughout 2014.
Mraz noted the recent visit by TLC show "Bakery Boss" host Buddy Valastro to Grandma Millie's Bakery was good publicity for the airport.
Mraz reported more than 1,000 Scouts came to the airport when the Twin Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America, conducted its fall camporee Oct. 4 through 6 at the airport.
"Things went very well," Mraz said. "They were very pleased."
