Virginia R. Hallenbeck, 89, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2013. During her lifetime she was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and teacher.
Virginia was born on October 10, 1924, in Danville, Virginia, the daughter of Ernest and Nancy Ritiro. When she was a young child, Virginia's family moved to Gloversville, N.Y., where she attended school and graduated from Gloversville High School.
In 1944, while she was a student at Cortland State Teacher's College, Virginia married her high school sweetheart, Leo G. Hallenbeck Jr. She went on to receive her bachelor's degree from Cortland, while her new husband went to Europe as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during WW II.

After Leo's return from Europe, the couple lived for a few years in Schenectady, N.Y. They then moved back to Gloversville, where they resided while raising their family. After returning to Gloversville, Virginia's teaching career continued for over twenty years and included her position as kindergarten teacher at Pleasant Avenue School in Johnstown for many years before she retired in 1981.
After retirement, Virginia became an avid and accomplished golfer as a member of Pine Brook Golf club, Kingsway Country Club in Lake Suzy, Fla. and as a frequent player at Nick Stoner Golf Course.
Virginia is survived by her son, Mark E. (Patricia) Hallenbeck; her daughter, Amy L. Hallenbeck; her grandson, John G. (Alicia) Hallenbeck; her sister, Nelia (John) Mace; her stepgrandchildren, Donald (Carrie) Hillman, Leigha (Jeremy) Rue, Jason (Casey) Hillman, and Rachael Hillman; and many nieces and nephews. In April 2013, Virginia was predeceased by her husband of 69 years. Her parents, her infant son, Jeffrey Hallenbeck and her son-in-law, Robert C. Checca also predeceased her.
Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate in Virginia's memory may do so by contributing to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, NY or another charitable organizagion of choice.
