AURORA - Senior captain Matthew Sleezer, a Gloversville graduate, secured a first-place finish wiin the men's 50-yard freestyle as the Wells College men's swimming team posted a 65-28 loss to The College at Brockport on Friday evening at the Wells College Aquatic Center.
With each institution participating in the first head-to-head meet of the year, Wells drops to 0-1 overall, while the Golden Eagles improve to 1-0 on the young season.
With a time of 23.20 seconds within the 50-yard freestyle, Sleezer recorded what would be the third-best time in program history. He fell short of his personal record time of 21.94 seconds, set at the NEAC Championships on Feb. 15, 2013. He also posted a time of 51.11 in the men's 100-yard freestyle, collecting five points for the Express while falling 1.09 seconds behind his personal and program record in the event.
Wells also racked up seven points in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay as Sleezer led a foursome of juniors that included Shrirang Gupta (New Delhi, India), Alex Lamphear (Springfield, N.H.) and Tyler Fischetti (Weedsport) to a relay time of 1:45.79.
