JOHNSTOWN - The Fulton County YMCA will conduct its annual fundraising telethon Oct. 27 at its facility, 213 Harrison St.
The event's major sponsor will be Time Warner Cable TV, and the associate sponsors are the Fulton Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare and Cornerstone Telephone.
The telethon will be broadcast live from 1 to 6 p.m. over local Channel 16.
The goal is to raise $55,000, according to a news release.
Each year, the YMCA conducts its annual telethon to help subsidize the costs associated with providing free and reduced-price services to the community.
"Not everyone who comes to the YMCA can afford to pay," YMCA Chief Executive Officer Steven Serge said, and this event helps to provide services to those people.
So far this year, the local Y has provided more than $84,000 worth of free or reduced-cost services to individuals in need.
The event will feature prominent local citizens who will appear as "guest hosts." The guest hosts confirmed so far include Assemblyman Marc Butler, Mayor Dayton King, Fulton-Montgomery Community College President Dustin Swanger, Johnstown Public Library Director Erica Wing and Patrick Michel, superintendent of HFM?BOCES.
Members of the YMCA Board of Directors will be on the phone bank and will accept phone-call pledges throughout the day. The additional volunteer groups who will be working the phones include several employees from Walmart as well as Nathan Littauer Hospital. Volunteers are still needed to answer the phones; anyone interested in helping on the phone bank can contact the YMCA.
The event will feature entertainment throughout the day. Scheduled to appear are Jenna Polling, Gary Van Slyke, Aaron Mittler, Beecher Creek and the Bentwood Rockers.
