Retha M. Seward, 89, of South Second Avenue, Broadalbin, entered into eternal rest on Sunday morning, October 13, 2013, at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam.
She was born in Cherokee, Kansas on July 15, 1924, a daughter of the late Dawson E. and Gladys F. McFall Standley and was raised in Lawton, Oklahoma. Retha was a 1941 graduate of Lawton High School. She moved to Amsterdam and was employed at Fariello's Ice Cream Shop and later Mohasco Industries. Upon her marriage, Retha moved to Broadalbin where she resided for fifty five years.
Mrs. Seward was employed at Broadalbin High School for twenty five years, retiring in 1986. She was a troop leader for the Hudson Valley Girl Scouts for many years and was a Sunday School teacher with her husband at the Broadalbin United Methodist Church. Retha was a member of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and enjoyed her volunteer work in the gift shop. She also was a volunteer at the Wilkinson Memorial Book Station, the Broadalbin Food Pantry, and was involved with Meals on Wheels in the Broadalbin area.
Along with her husband, Retha was very active in the Broadalbin and Fulton County Democratic Clubs, area bowling leagues, and enjoyed boating on Sacandaga Lake.
She was a member and served as a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Broadalbin, and enjoyed sharing her beautiful singing voice with all others in various church choirs.
Retha enjoyed hobbies of gardening, ceramics, crossword puzzles, and reading non-fiction. She spent many joyous times with her loving family on vacations to Virginia Beach, Cape Cod, Thousand Islands, and daily road trips and also enjoyed holidays and special celebrations with them.
She was married to Roger L. Seward on January 12, 1957. He died September 19, 2001. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Margaret; and a brother, Joseph.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Gary Easton of Esperance; grandchildren, John (Chastity) Markert of Virginia Beach, Va., Glenn (Danie) Easton of Schenectady, and Jessica Easton (Paul Leveillee) of Delanson; great-grandson, Tristan Collins; great-granddogs, Peka, Branson, and Ziggy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 54 West Main Street, Broadalbin, with the Rev. Linda Martin, officiating. Burial will follow at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 and Black Street) Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, both in care of the funeral home.
Retha's family extends sincere appreciation to the entire staff at River Ridge Living Center and to her special caregivers for the compassionate care she received. We pay an everlasting tribute to Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma, and friend as we deeply mourn the loss of her physical presence, but we know she will always be with us spiritually, and in eternal peace.
